5 Things we do in real life that we forget about on Social Media
Hi, I’m Beckie. I work in community management for a digital agency in NYC, write a tiny lifestyle blog, Cubicle57, and do some freelance social media consulting on ‘le side at MakeYourMediaSocial, where I teach people “The Twitter” and “The Facebook.” What generally happens when people come to me is after I teach them the platforms: the how’s and the what’s of tweeting tweets and posting posts, people get terrified and intimidated by the pressure of the escalated social media climate today. Well I’m here to tell you, its just like real life. If you can have successful relationships in real life, you can have successful relationships online. Here’s how to not get bogged down with hashtags, mentions, pins, and likes; and really take your media and make it social.
1. Shut UpI consistently see brand after brand only talking about themselves tweet after tweet, post after post. Develop yourself as a thought leader, and have the confidence to share events or services other than your own, open dialogue with your followers about THEM, not you. Your potential customers will find that kind of confidence intriguing and will in turn remember you and talk about you to others so you don’t have to.
2. EditRemember, you don’t spend your entire day to day life complaining and always talking about how horrible things are, or how tired you are, or how much work sucks. If you do, who are you talking to? Because people probably stopped listening long ago. The same rules of editing goes for the internet. I believe in transparency and sharing the good and the tough, but if you’re reviewing your current social situation and it is post after post full of how stressed you are trying to “keep up” maybe what you need is a break, not a new business strategy.
3. Take a BreakSee above. When you are tired, take a break. Breathe, reboot and try something new instead of pushing out the same old crap. Say less, better.
4. Don’t be “That Guy”It’s like being at a holiday party right? You don’t meet someone for the first time and open with your business card and an outstretched palm asking “What can you do for me?” Making connections via social media works the exact same way. Take the time to develop a relationship and your blog/business/product won’t be such a hard sell. If you are interesting, people will take an interest naturally.
5. Be PickyYou don’t eat every food, you don’t posses every skill, and you don’t wear every trend on the spring runway. Just because there is a new social platform every month doesn’t mean you have to add it to your TeaxDeux list. Take the time to find out if it’s something you are even interested in investing more time in before you run around exhausting yourself “keeping up.” Do the things you do well, and leave the rest for others.
Thanks for having me, I hope to see you all around the Internet! In the meantime you can sign up for my bi-montly social newsletter, or follow me on Twitter & Facebook.

Thanks Tracie! I find that people get so stressed out in the act of “getting social” and “getting online” that they forget that behind every tweet, email, and FB post there is a human element so the same basic rules apply.
