” I know you talk about creating meaningful spaces. How exactly do you make that happen? I have tons of photos of family vacations and stuff, but I think I’m missing something. Thanks for your help”
Well Thank you, Gen H from Washington. Your question comes up all the time, and in fact, is one of the reasons I began focusing on this exact thing! You have a GREAT start by showing pictures of family, but you don’t have to show everything. Here are a few of my suggestions, on how to bring meaning to your space.
1. Pictures of people you love. As I mentioned above, pictures of loved ones is always a great place to start. However, you don’t need a million to make the connection. The first thing I usually help my clients with, is editing. This means weeding out the photos that really don’t mean much to you. Select unique photos that create conversation, or bring great memories to you. In the photo below, Im showing you the top of my bar, and a photo of my mom ( who passed away) when she was about 7. I love this sweet little photo, and It always creates a conversation when people come over. I love talking about it, and I love seeing my mom as a little girl, especially now that I am a mama my self.
2. Group Memories together. For instance, frame a great picture from your favorite vacation, and add some seashells, or trinkets you got on your journey, OR do what I did here. This is a group of vacation stuff, but from different vacations. The photo strip is on the very first vacation Grant and I took without Liam, when he was 2. The seashells are from our recent beach vacation, along with the Nelson Mandela book that is one of my favorites to read on the beach!
3. Use pieces from your childhood, or another time in your life you loved. I know not everyone LOVED their childhood, but surely, there is a space of time in your life when you were the happiest? maybe that time is now, maybe it was a slice of childhood. Either way, pick a few items that make you happy, and display them. I have 3 wooden stackable blocks that have been passed down in my family. I remember paying with them when I was little, and now Liam plays with them. They have so much meaning, and that meaning translates into design pieces! ( other ideas: corks from wine, postcard collection, a map displayed with all the places you have traveled)
Just remember, The best way to create meaningful design in your home, is to allow your home to tell YOUR story (tweet this). This is what creates connection.
There you have it, my top tips for Design Tip Tuesday! Hope this helped Gen! Please feel free to send in your design questions to designTips@designthoughtsinteriors.com,
