When I finally made the LEAP to go out on my own as a designer here in Nashville, I took the time to sit down and write out my intentions. I had already worked for Mega High end residential firms, Commercial Design Firms who designed for Fortune 500 companies, traveled to design third and forth homes and worked with celebrities. Was it fun? OH YEAH..was it a great experience YES…but there was always a disconnect for me. I remember a time in the midst of caring for my mom as she was battling brain cancer, I was still working for a high end firm, when I received a call from a sobbing client, first anger, then sadness is what I heard on the other end. She couldn’t understand, she had done everything right, she had paid her bill, and thought she had a great relationship with us..but it was just terrible..she only received 5 of her custom patio pillows and her very important guests were arriving the next day. It was a major turning point for me, and actually one of the blessings that came out of my moms death, weird right? I knew in that particular moment, that one day, I would create something different. (Don’t get me wrong..I loved working for that firm, and still use so many of the things that I learned there). I’m getting off topic here..back to my intention for Design Thoughts. I am creating a design business that helps home owners appreciate the beauty in what they already have. I am helping them CREATE A STORY for their home, by using pieces that have meaning to them. Pieces that elicit memories and happiness. When they tap into that, their home is full of LIFE.
SO that brings me to my current client!! Their home is FULL of stories. Before I “put myself out there” I wrote down, and began to manifest who my perfect client would be..big surprise, I got them!
Styling is what I love to do. I love to dig through stuff and find GEMS that no one saw before, or use a handmade clay bowl that your daughter made to display trinkets. I have styled a few areas in this particular clients home, and here is just one space. Its a Restoration Hardware bookshelf, and I SWEAR to you..EVERY.SINGLE. ITEM on this shelf has a story. It is an honor to be allowed to sit so closely to deep family history, of SOMEONE Else’s family!!!! Lighting is the next thing on the list, so that’s why the pictures aren’t so great. Sorry this is so wordy for a post that I really just wanted to share photos on…but hey, that’s what happens when I haven’t blogged in over a week!!!!!!!!
Do you love your job?
I still cant believe that I get paid doing something I love. I thought that only happened to other people. Im telling you…RIGHT NOW…figure out what you want to do. Be specific..write it down..Make it happen. Its so worth the turmoil you might feel at first!!

How fulfilling Kim!How little did we know way back when we were at Kendall, what we would be doing now. It’s a wonderful thing! I am so thankful 🙂
