Happy Wednesday!
The idea of my home office has changed SO many times since I began my own design business in 2013. I had visions of bright and cheery, modern, and no clutter. The truth was though, I had a built in desk that was dark, with no natural light, and I shared my space with Liam. My office, was also his playroom. For a VERY long time, I searched for the perfect desk, and last fall, finally found it. I set it up in the playroom, and very quickly was aware that my desk was also a perfect play place. Most days I didn’t care, I am not the mom who cares if Liam is playing while I work, I actually enjoy it, but lately, I have become increasingly busier, with important drawings, and items that belonged to clients. It was time to REVAMP my home office, and give Liam his entire playroom to do what he does best, PLAY!!
I had always wished I had a ton of natural light, but the only room in our home that is full of light, is our living room. This room has ALSO become over run with toys. This is where we store Liams Legos, in hopes of creating less clutter around my home office in the playroom. Do you see the chaos I was creating?!!!
Here is what I would love to show you as my living room:
Unfortunately, THIS (below) is what it had become. MESS.MESS.CHAOS. toy mania in every single room. TIME FOR CHANGE. Home office redesign was so necessary.
I originally did not want to move my desk into our living room. We made a choice to not have a TV in this room so we are forced to use communication ( lol) and connection when we sit in here. I was fearful that if my desk was there, I would be “One more minute-ing” all night, and not be able to leave my work. By the way, that is yet to be seen, I still am not 100% sure how it will all work out, but I DO know its better then wiping mud off important drawings because a toy from outside was sat on my desk.
The other problem with bringing my desk out to the sun filled living room, was the unfinished back of the desk. It was clearly used up against A wall, and the previous owner didn’t need a finished back. So I did what any other “Need this fixed now” designer would do. I slapped some white paint on the back! It turned out great. I am so excited to now have my clean, sun filled, clutter-less modern home office!! its just what I have been envisioning.
I added really simple details to create a few more layers on top of the stark white. The new succulent is from Trader Joes for $5! and the wooden Frame ( from Hey Rooster General store here in Nashville) adds texture and dimension.
Im so happy with this new space! Its another step forward in designing my best life. I work from home, and now I am going to love the space I’m working in!!
Do you work from home? how do you handle your home office space?
XO.Kim

I love this! I am in the corner of a basement, so my kitchen table turns into my office space when I need to be near the kids (which is always!). I need to figure out how to create a workspace that is closer to the action!!
