I was so excited when my friend, Amy, posted a quick picture on Facebook, to show the new project she had started!! Also so happy when she said I could share with YOU! Chalkboard paint, of course, has been making its way around the Internet/blogger/DIY world, and I have always loved the idea of it, just haven’t had a chance to tackle it!! I was even MORE excited when she told me it was a super easy project!! Take a look at Amy’s chalkboard paint wall, it turned out GREAT and I am so excited to feature it so you can see too 🙂
Here is the “before” wall, just your regular, staircase partial wall. (NOT ANYMORE!!) This is a typical spot that gets forgotten in people’s homes!! Chalkboard Paint is a great, creative solution!
Amy said, “Directions on the paint can said 2 coats but I did 4 because I wanted a deeper finish. The paint dries to the touch in 30-minutes, and you can reapply after 4 hours. Not a time-consuming project. It also coats pretty easily with a roller. I decided against using a magnetic paint primer because, while it would be cool to have the wall double-duty for magnets, I read bad things about the safety of that paint, and that it can mess up your wifi! No thanks.
The second picture is a conditioning pic. Basically you have to let the wall cure for 4 days before you condition and use it. By condition, you have to cover the wall in chalk and then erase. Then it’s ready! So there is also a testing-it-out pic of Jackson 🙂
From my research I learned that it’s better to wipe the surface down with a damp cloth vs. using an eraser, so that’s what we’ve been doing each night. It looks neater too. There was hardly any odor when I painted, which surprised me, pleasantly. I did ventilate anyway just in case. I have done a lot of painting and this ranks high on the easy meter, the directions did say to sand rough surfaces prior to painting, but mine wasn’t rough, so I skipped that step”
LOVE to hear things like “Ranks HIGH on the easy meter”!! YAY!!
It looks AWESOME Amy!! Thank you for sharing!
P.S Has anyone tried the magnetic paint?? I would love to hear from an actual reader who tried it..do you like it??
Happy Monday!!

I’m curious to know how easy it is to return the wall to it’s original color? I would be afraid that there would always be a dark black undertone – especially if you wanted it to go back to say white or ivory… any idea?

J…i think it would be easy to cover with primer, just like a really dark grey wall or brown. Good question!

Love this! What a fabulous, fun idea!!! Thank you both, Kim and Amy, for sharing. Kim…do you have any good baby nursery ideas? I am always sending out things to my clients. Could send a little design tid bit and direct them to your blog. (Just an idea!) xoxox marin
